RIGHT-CLICK and choose PRINT (or select FILE, PRINT) and read this file before using the software. STEP 1: INSTALL KEYBOARD SOFTWARE (KEYMAN 6.x). If you have not already separately installed Keyman 6.x, then run the file GreekClassical.exe. It is included in GreekClassical.zip, which you can download from: http://members.aol.com/AtticGreek When prompted during the Keyman install, UNCHECK the add-in for Text Services. If you are running Windows 2000/XP, also leave the "Word Add-in" greyed out. (You can also uninstall them later from "Programs, Tavultesoft Keyman, Keyman Configuration, Add-ins.") Leave the "RichEdit" add-in checked or installed. It is not recommended at this time that you use the "visual keyboard" feature. You can turn visual keyboard off by unchecking it from the Options tab in "Programs, Tavultesoft Keyman, Keyman Configuration." STEP 2: SELECT THE TOGGLE KEY FOR THE GREEK KEYBOARD. After installation, the first step is to select hotkeys. Go to "Programs, Tavultesoft Keyman, Keyman Configuration." (Recommended:) Select "Alt Z" as the hotkey for the Greek keyboard. Under the "options" tab, make sure to check the box for: "Keyboard hotkeys toggle keyboard activation." Select "none" for "Keyman off hotkey." Then press "OK." STEP 3: LOAD KEYMAN. The next step is to load Keyman: Run "Keyman" (under Start, Programs, Tavultesoft Keyman). (To automatically load whenever Windows starts, select that under the "Options" tab in configuration. See step 2.) STEP 4: TEST IN ANY UNICODE APPLICATION. The MS Word document "fonttest.doc" will help you test this. It is included in the file GreekClassical.zip, which you can download from http://members.aol.com/AtticGreek. Use the hotkey sequence you chose in Step 2 (such as Alt-Z). and type in Greek (but see step 5). If you have problems, reboot the computer (Windows sometimes needs a reboot to properly pick up a new font). STEP 5: SELECT THE PROPER FONT (PALATINO LINOTYPE). Make sure to have a good Unicode font selected, one with support for all the classical Greek characters. I recommend the font Palatino Linotype (comes with Windows 2000/XP). The only defects I detected with the latest (XP) version of Palatino Linotype are: 1. No lunate sigma and no lowercase digamma. 2. Only precomposed characters are fully supported. (#2 is not an issue, since this keyboard always selects precomposed characters.) If you have problems, reboot the computer (Windows sometimes needs a reboot to properly pick up a new font). STEP 6: TURN THE KEYBOARD OFF. To switch back to your normal keyboard, press the toggle hotkey again. The keyboard software to use this keyboard is not mine. It is called Keyman. Updates and licensing information are available at: http://www.tavultesoft.com/keyman/ In Windows 2000/NT/XP, you can use the keyboard with any Unicode application, such as MS Word, Notepad, etc. Under Windows 9x or ME, it will only work with MS Word, and only if you install the special Word add-in during the installation of the full Keyman package. Most characters are as you would expect, but note: eta = h, theta = q, xi = c or j, chi = x, psi = y (psy), digamma=alt+v. Medial sigma is automatically converted to final sigma as appropriate. Accent marks (select AFTER the vowel): Perseus/Tufts Beta code system (combine as you wish): / for acute, \ for grave, = for circumflex, ] for smooth, [ for rough | for iota, + for diaresis - for breve, _ for macron ` is a deadkey to pass the next character through without translation. Hitting the same accent or breathing mark that a char already has will remove it. (For capital letters, the breathing mark should be selected before other marks.) MANUEL LOPEZ AtticGreek@aol.com Frequently asked questions: BUG IN MS WORD 2002: Sometimes Word 2002 produces an unwanted sigma conversion. The workaround is to disable (uncheck) a specific "autoformat as you type" option: Ordinals (1st) with superscript. You will find this under Tools, AutoCorrect options, "AutoFormat as you type." FONT SUPPORT IN ADOBE: You must make sure the font is included in the embedding options. Go to Distiller, then Settings, Job Options, Fonts, and check Embed all fonts (or embed the needed font individually). FONT SUPPORT IN PDFFACTORY (www.fineprint.com): With the print dialog up, select properties, fonts, and embed the right font (e.g., Palatino Linotype). FONT EMBEDDING IN WORD: This is only necessary to send a file to someone who is not using Windows XP (or Windows 2000): Select Tools, Options, Save, Embed TrueType fonts. You can also do it on a document by document basis under File, SaveAs, Tools, Save Options.
